(no subject)

I am not especially good with plants. Though I've had my spider plants with me since my parents moved out west over two years ago, they are spider plants and perhaps the most resilent plant species I have ever met. I was given some rubber plants (the second hardest house plant to kill) when I moved in to this apartment and over the course of last year, one of them died altogether. Rubber plants are sort of like cactus, because they hold their own water, so they are really easy to take care of.

Well, a family friend brought me a real, honest to goodness, flowering plant two weeks ago. (Clearly a mistake), but I've been really good with it. Not only has it grown taller, but it's bloomed these lovely red flowers. I've been watering it. I've been awesome with it!

When I woke up this morning, the plant - pot and all - were scattered all over my living room floor. I can't for the life of me sort out how it managed to fall. The plate it was sitting on is still quite intact and well positioned on the mantle. But the now-broken pot, the soil, and the plant are all over the floor.

Truly, I have a black thumb. Even if I don't kill them through neglect, they start jumping off their perches just to get away from me.

Edit: Aaaaand in my efforts to re-pot the plant in the now dried-out soil, I've succeeded in over-watering it really awfully terribly. I have no clue how to fix it without buying more soil.

;_;

I'm not very good with plants either, though I've managed to keep my impatiens alive since I got them back in spring/summer, so that's something! They have no flowers though, which makes me sad.

On a different note, I'm in the mood to change up my mood theme (hee~) and I was wondering if I could match you since yours is so cool ^_^

[identity profile] akeyoftime.livejournal.com 2006-11-24 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)
It's around on the mood theme communities. Shame on me, I haven't put the credit up yet (I lost the link in the crash).

[identity profile] i-paint-the-sky.livejournal.com 2006-11-24 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Which mood theme community?

[identity profile] akeyoftime.livejournal.com 2006-11-24 07:09 pm (UTC)(link)
You're going to have to look, I'm afraid :S

[identity profile] i-paint-the-sky.livejournal.com 2006-11-24 07:14 pm (UTC)(link)
...there are like, 200 of them or something.

[identity profile] i-paint-the-sky.livejournal.com 2006-11-24 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
OH! I know what we can do!

Could you go into your journal style, go to the mood theme, and then go to view it? And send me the link? I can copy it from there.

[identity profile] i-paint-the-sky.livejournal.com 2006-11-24 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Even better! I think that once I have one link I should be able to get them all. So you don't have to do anything ^_^

*goes to work on this*

[identity profile] i-paint-the-sky.livejournal.com 2006-11-24 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Right. So that idea worked for a fair amount, but I can't seem to get all the moods to appear ;_;

So yeah, back to my second option of giving me the link in your journal to the mood theme (like this one of my current one: http://www.livejournal.com/moodlist.bml?moodtheme=146542&ownerid=2035565)

Suicidal spider plant? ROUGH. :p

[identity profile] partytodamascus.livejournal.com 2006-11-24 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
i dont have enough daylight in my room for plants, so ive just avoided even trying.
though i'll make a valiant attempt if i ever get a room that faces sunlight at any time of day.
... my room faces kind of north-east, but there are too many trees around.
i could potentially grow hostas because they're shade plants, but im too afraid of killing them to get any.

Naw, it's not the spider plants. Those guys are way too chill for anything like a suicide attempt. This was quite a lovely flower with a super thick steam. Mind, it's super weak too, since it stopped being able to support itself ocne the blossoms openned up ^^*

Impatients grow extremely well in the shade as well (we used to have them in a garden in front of the old house), but they're thirsty little things.

I tried that already, I need your Photobucket password.

LOL at suicidal plants. >>; But I hope it will be okay. *sends loff*

Umm. My only dealing with plants are the ones my dad has in the house. He absolutely loves playing with plants. The only plant I call my own is one I stole from a California museum. :DDDD I was visiting family in Cali, and they took us to a museum that had a really spiffy garden. In the garden, there were cacti that grew in the shape of a rose. It's hard to describe. Um. Anyway, they were rose-wannabe cacti. XD And I thought it was super cute ('cos they were about the size of a quarter?), so I kind of uprooted one and took it home with me on a five hour plane flight. :DD It's sitting in my kitchen, facing a window.

*coughs* So. Yeah. It hasn't died yet, but when I first got it, I didn't think of having it face the sun, so only one petal was getting a ton of sunlight and that petal grew abnormally large, lol.

Anyway. XD I'll stop babbling! Hope your plants will be okay! XD

Wow, either your plant is suicidal, or your place is possessed. Either way, if you want to try to save the soil, you can try to dry is out, but if there is a lot, then that's not going to be a viable option. I would recommend getting new soil, but since the season is over, it's going to be a bit harder to find it.

Also, for an easy to take care of plant, look at air-plants or air-cacti. Basically, the live off of the moisture in the air and never need watering, so long as the air isn't overly dry all the time.

Dear, I've never ever bought a plant. I've either inherited them or received them as a gift. I never wanted to be a plant parent - I killed all the plant projects you build in elementary school, even the carrot seeds we planted when I was a Scouter.

The blossoms are shrivelling, but I'm going to assume they simply have a short lifespan, as the second stalk is starting to let the buds slip out!
