I am not especially good with plants. Though I've had my spider plants with me since my parents moved out west over two years ago, they are spider plants and perhaps the most resilent plant species I have ever met. I was given some rubber plants (the second hardest house plant to kill) when I moved in to this apartment and over the course of last year, one of them died altogether. Rubber plants are sort of like cactus, because they hold their own water, so they are really easy to take care of.
Well, a family friend brought me a real, honest to goodness, flowering plant two weeks ago. (Clearly a mistake), but I've been really good with it. Not only has it grown taller, but it's bloomed these lovely red flowers. I've been watering it. I've been awesome with it!
When I woke up this morning, the plant - pot and all - were scattered all over my living room floor. I can't for the life of me sort out how it managed to fall. The plate it was sitting on is still quite intact and well positioned on the mantle. But the now-broken pot, the soil, and the plant are all over the floor.
Truly, I have a black thumb. Even if I don't kill them through neglect, they start jumping off their perches just to get away from me.
Edit: Aaaaand in my efforts to re-pot the plant in the now dried-out soil, I've succeeded in over-watering it really awfully terribly. I have no clue how to fix it without buying more soil.

Date: 2006-11-24 08:16 pm (UTC)though i'll make a valiant attempt if i ever get a room that faces sunlight at any time of day.
... my room faces kind of north-east, but there are too many trees around.
i could potentially grow hostas because they're shade plants, but im too afraid of killing them to get any.

Date: 2006-11-25 05:51 am (UTC)Umm. My only dealing with plants are the ones my dad has in the house. He absolutely loves playing with plants. The only plant I call my own is one I stole from a California museum. :DDDD I was visiting family in Cali, and they took us to a museum that had a really spiffy garden. In the garden, there were cacti that grew in the shape of a rose. It's hard to describe. Um. Anyway, they were rose-wannabe cacti. XD And I thought it was super cute ('cos they were about the size of a quarter?), so I kind of uprooted one and took it home with me on a five hour plane flight. :DD It's sitting in my kitchen, facing a window.
*coughs* So. Yeah. It hasn't died yet, but when I first got it, I didn't think of having it face the sun, so only one petal was getting a ton of sunlight and that petal grew abnormally large, lol.
Anyway. XD I'll stop babbling! Hope your plants will be okay! XD

Date: 2006-11-26 01:06 am (UTC)Also, for an easy to take care of plant, look at air-plants or air-cacti. Basically, the live off of the moisture in the air and never need watering, so long as the air isn't overly dry all the time.
