What the hell?
I don't hold books my as incredibly sacred. (Maybe just a little?) I have a lot of respect for them and I'd probably hesitate before ripping pages out of them or cutting them, but writing in the margins? Highlighting? Folding down corners? Sure. Why not. I know some bibliophiles consider this sacrilegious, but books are meant to be used, enjoyed, and understood and if that takes a few folded corners and pencil marks, then I fail to see the problem. It's a little shakier with a library book, but so long as it's still legible for the next person, I do not really consider it a big deal.
Ripping thirty pages out of a library book, however, is a whole other ballpark. That's half a chapter, just gone. RRRRRRrrr.

(Obviously, these kinds of things in reason! If the cover or pages are falling off or out, that's not such a great thing.)
