What the hell?

I don't hold books my as incredibly sacred. (Maybe just a little?) I have a lot of respect for them and I'd probably hesitate before ripping pages out of them or cutting them, but writing in the margins? Highlighting? Folding down corners? Sure. Why not. I know some bibliophiles consider this sacrilegious, but books are meant to be used, enjoyed, and understood and if that takes a few folded corners and pencil marks, then I fail to see the problem. It's a little shakier with a library book, but so long as it's still legible for the next person, I do not really consider it a big deal.

Ripping thirty pages out of a library book, however, is a whole other ballpark. That's half a chapter, just gone. RRRRRRrrr.

Devilspeech! Heathen!

Just kidding, I know not everyone is as obsessed as I am about keeping books in pristine condition. The way I look at it is that ater I read it, it will be on display for years and years. I can spare a few extra moments each time I'm reading it in exchange for the years and years of pristine minty look once I'm done.

If the book is a nice hardcover copy, then I'm inclined to agree with you. One of my hardcovers got wet (quite mysterious) last year, badly enough that it warped the front cover and left a nasty stain. I was really upset about that.

I'm a firm believer in keeping books healthy, primarily because I am a devotee of used book stores.
On the other hand, I very much do like if I get a book and it has been annotated well; it's like a free discussion landing in my lap. I just dislike highlighters.

I am thus annoyed on your behalf for the wanton destruction, and somewhat in agreement about annotation.

I got used to highlighters from used textbooks, but I do admit prefer not to have those marks in. What someone else finds important to useful to their understanding may not be for me.

Used books stores are awesome love. There are vague notions of a Victoria bookstore crawl with some of my friends - I swear there are more used bookstores crammed into that town (especially if you include the general area) than an equivalent portion of Toronto.

Ugh, I had a book from the library once that had been censored. For being sexist. Against males.

The book was about eighties science fiction fandom. It wasn't sexist, it was reflecting the state of eighties science fiction fandom! And I'd kinda like to know what those sentences were!

While sexism is an awful thing, blacking out the sentences you disagree with is a ridiculous solution. If it really bothers you that much, report it to the library and get them to take it off the shelves.

I can be sexist *and* reflecting the state of eighties science fiction fandom :P

From the context around the "offending" sentences, it wasn't sexist, it was an accurate portrayal of the way a lot of male fen regarded female fen back in the day.

And either way, LIBRARY BOOK. :p

Nay, books should be taken care of! :P I hate dog-earing pages and even more so highlighting. Although if I do buy a used book, it's ok for some notes. In pencil. In the margins only, no underlining. And if it's a library book, then no-go. I'm even careful not to crease the spine while I'm reading.

I get annoyed when I have to coddle a book while I read it. I'm much too busy being caught up the story.... and you know what I say. A banged up book is a just a book with character.

(Obviously, these kinds of things in reason! If the cover or pages are falling off or out, that's not such a great thing.)

Books are definitely sacred to me. I don't write in my Collection of Books, but I will most definitely write and make use of my text books from school.

I agree with you that is what they are there for - to learn and to learn well. So, yes, I'm in the league of book vandalism, if that is what it is called.

But, I do not rip pages out of books - how awful - especially for the other person who needs to read something important!

A great big Rawrrrr!

Take Care and I hope you are feeling much better than the other day!

Here is a smile to keep you tidy: :0)

Loads of Love,
Arlene (Briseis09)
