Diamonds in the Rough
Apr. 25th, 2004 05:20 pmBe careful! I am armed! With a fork!
^_^ I'm feeling much recovered from my earlier post. My hair is doing all sorts of interesting things since getting wet, some of which are actually rather entertaining, though I think trying to explain them to someone else would simply result in confusion.
I'm armed with a fork in a sea of papers. Literally. Today is cleaning day in this house, and I have tackled my room - properly - for the fist time in eight months. Wow that's a lot of mess.
I'm also getting rid of stuff. I've filled half a box so far, mostly with books. Then I spent half an hour with my feet in my closet and the rest of me just outside, sorting through the stuff on the bookshelf in here. Now I'm tackling the box above it, which is full to the seams with papers, photos and binders. I think that my keep pile, added together, comes out to a little bigger than my recycle pile, but considering my pack-ratish habits, I'm not doing poorly at all. Though my room is an even bigger disaster than before. Everyone knows that between stage. That's where I am right now. My room is an unqualified mess.
I've found several useful and cool things during all of this as well, including pictures from when Mathilde was here, a bunch of old Archie comics (worthless due to their beating, but sentimental nonetheless), my sunglasses (thank god), my hospital cards (I'm covered for four Ontario hospitals (Well, if they'd still admit me at Sick Kids, have a duplicate of one of those hospitals, and one Québec hospital.) and a disquette that very, very possibly has a copy of "Escape" of it, a short story I wrote last year for Writer's Craft and am very fond of. I need to get on the downstairs computers later today - the disquette needs reformatting to work on my laptop and that sort of defeats the purpose.
So yes. It's been an interesting day. Furan also got accepted to study in Japan next year, which is freakin' awesome. Good thing she actually knows some Jap already, but she's smart and will get herself caught up, despite her more fatalistic views on things.

Apr. 25th, 2004 10:05 pmSo "Escape" wasn't on the disk. A lot of my writing was - an older draft of "Cut Diamonds", several drafts of "The Waiting Girl" (I story I hated even as I wrote it) and a few other nicknacks.
So I started going through the other disks around the computer, because I was getting really angry that I might have lost this story. It's probably not the best thing I'll ever write, but I love it and I know it's good.
And so I try an older, unlabelled disk and find a file labelled "Niteru4", or something along those lines. Niteru is the protagonist in "Escape" and I'm prone to giving stories in progress working titles by the main character's name. At this point, I'd be relieved just to find an older draft of the thing. I don't mind re-polishing.
Double click.
It won't open - but would I like to retry?
It can't be that easy. Really not. Life has to remind me every now and then that it's in control and will promptly bite me. If I can't get this off the disquette, I am going to scream. The kicker, of course, is that I had a hard copy of the story and I think I recycled it some months ago thinking oh, it's on disquette, I'll be fine.
Stupidité. And yes, I really felt the need to use the french word.
On the upside, all I have to do tommorow is make more progress on my room and go back up to school. I haev fines to settle with the library - which now that I've sat down and done approximate math for, I've discovered I really do owe them that much money. Here summer budget, take a one-sixth slash right now, before May even begins.
-_-
I really hope I can get some work this week. Calling the agent and seeing what we can see.
