HAPPY PI DAY

I'm actually attempting squash cupcakes today (no joke - carrots are still a no, so I'm subbing in acorn squash), so wish me luck. If you're curious about my culinary adventures, here is the original recipes. Below the cut is what I'm actually making.

SugarFree-GlutenFree-Vegan Squash Cupcakes (now with less raisins and walnuts!) )

I don't love millet flour because it absorbs water poorly, but as the secondary flour in the mix, it might do okay, and the gluten-free thing really needs a flour mix. I'm low on options without rice! That's on the soon-to-be-reintroduced list.

Roommates will be getting cream cheese frosting to top it all off, probably store bought. (I know, I know, but SPOONS. I DON'T HAVE THEM.)

I have no idea how the chemistry is going to fall out, but it should be exciting!

Don't even need to surf to a news site or turn on a television; I can hear the partying in the streets. I heard it was one hell of a nail-bitter too! I may go join them later, because I really can't resist a euphoric crowd. (But first, copyright and laundry!)

Thanks to everyone for commenting on my last post <3 It's been a frustrating semester, but I think I'm mostly in a better headspace now to push through to the end.

[livejournal.com profile] sabrina_il asked for thoughts about Battlestar Galactica’s Anastasia “Dee” Dualla in the Impromptuthon, but one hundred words wasn't likely to do this fantastic character justice. Though the prompt was for meta, I've mixed it in with a picspam; she'll know why ;)

Dee has been one of my favourite Battlestar characters from the start and there’s so much to celebrate about her arc. When we meet Dee in the mini-serires, she's a Petty Officer serving aboard the Battlestar Galactica, in Communications. She functions as an everyman for a great deal of the first season; it's through her we make several discoveries that are key to the culture of the show, such as the Memorial Wall. Dee dates; Dee works hard; and she never stops. So much of her storyline goes unrecognized, buried in the romantic story arc that dominates the third season and bleeds into the second and fourth, but I'll never forget the woman who told a flustered Billy Keikeya "In or out."

(Thanks to http://www.niciasus.com/ and http://www.frak-that.com/ for the caps.)

Posting at [livejournal.com profile] halfamoon is going on until the 14th in celebration of characters who identify as women (I'm absolutely thrilled that the festivities are explicitly including characters who aren't cisgendered!) There's been a ton of fantastic fan work posted across a huge variety of fandoms, from the tiny and obscure to the big players, but I want to highlight The Unpopular Woman Love Post.

There are some awesome characters popping up – Riley (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles), Gwen (Torchwood), Gwen (BBC Merlin), Jo Grant (Classic Who), Ellen, Jo, and Bela (Supernatural) Dee, Tory, and Cally (Battlestar Galactica), Weir (Atlantis), Dawn (Buffy)

AND SOMEONE STARTED A KATHERINE PULASKI LOVE THREAD! GLEE!

Go show these under appreciated characters some love already!

There is a "Marg, Princess Warrior" video behind the cut! For those unawares, Marg, played by Canadian actor and comedian Mary Walsh, wanders (wandered?) around Canada and terrorizes political leaders of all stripes. The backdrop of the clip is the last round of federal elections, but rant is still eerily relevant.

Also, the Atlantic coast is beautiful!

I seem to have forgotten that I was going out tonight and have left myself in a bit of a bind, timewise. Time to get to work!

Quick fic rec for you this morning, a snapshot of the relationship between Supernatural's Special Agent Henrikson and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles' Agent Ellison. Gen, spoilers through "Jus in Bello" and "The Demon Hand" respectively. Requiem (Casualties of the Human Condition) Go read, it's delightful!

Furiously writing fic, being poked with needles (less furiously), and working on Tuesday's presentation about society and dissent. Amongst other things! I have also got my hands on the latest and final Codex Alera book by Jim Butcher, oh yes.

Why hello there!

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] aldehyde and [livejournal.com profile] deeplyunhip for your lovely cards! I found them waiting for me when I got in last night. That does mean I'm back in the east, happily settling back into routines. I missed you, eddoes and kolhrabi! (Could not find them on the west coast and it was sad.) I'm currently losing the jet lag battle, but give it a few days; I always have a harder time coming east than going west.

Though it wasn't all on what I should have been working on (ficathon deadline is starting to loom), I wrote some comment fic over the holidays. Riley-centric TSCC fic here, Martha-centric Doctor Who fic here, Torchwood Jack fic here and a little bit of love for Supernatural's Ellen Harvelle.

I'm not entirely happy with the Martha fic in particular; I'm far too wordy and maybe it's formality that I don't like in the tone, but I can't quite put my finger on the problem with it. I like the Jack piece best. I'm so much more comfortable with dialogue!

Below the cut is the trailer for Doctor Who's fifth series. It's barely a snap shot of what's to come, but the tonal and visual differences are already startling. I'm curious to see what Moffat is going to do with the show.

I really enjoyed "The End of Time", though I am inclined to have one last laugh at RTD's gender biases and at a scene that, while awesome, felt surreal, like fanfiction on the screen. I know this is all vague but GUH, PACKING.

This was originally a comment posted to a community, but it occurred to me that some of you might find interest in the post as well. Apologies to those that will get the double-post!

Below the cut are a list of disability-related resources, from awesome activist blogs to fiction and non-fiction bibliographies, as well as two fanfic recs (both Supernatural) and links to two themed databases.

Merlin, you are an entertaining little show, but Minor spoilers for early S1 )

Other general remarks include that Anthony Head continues to be amazing in any role he portrays, Gaius is so dear, and my femmeslashin' heart is not at all opposed to Gwen/Morgana, though obvs I enjoy the other aspects of their relationship as well. Also, despite its formulaic nature, I find Arthur/Morgana highly entertaining. I'll be curious to see where it all goes, but at the moment I'm particularly interested in Gaius' and Morgana's plotlines, which I suspect are going to get truly fantastic before the season is out.

Oh Dollhouse, did you really have to go there?

Ramblings pertaining to the portrayal of disability below the cut. Spoilers for episodes 2x05 and 2x06. Some acting props and a tip of the hat to gender portrayal at the end.

My allergist has ordered me on a diet of rarely-preferably-never eaten foods (on the basis that this makes me less likely to be allergic to them) while we wait on getting to the second round of testing.

I consider myself pretty well-eaten in the context of Canada-US food culture, including vegetarian/vegan fare, and I'm having a hard time drawing up a list of foods that I do not currently eat at least on occasion. Help me with my research! What are some of the rarer foods that you enjoy? I live in a big city and can probably find access to internationally grown foods, so lay it on me.

I've also seen the clips for next week and YESSSSSSSS, I LOVE THE CASTING SO HARD. In both videos, actually, but especially in the second one. (And the Vancouver-based actors just keep getting recycled on new shows, I love it.)

[livejournal.com profile] donutsweeper posted a set of "Five Times" Supernatural stories which detail Five Ways Dean Did Not Become a Hunter. The first drabble, At his grandfather's knees, is my favourite, but the third, Graduating summa cum laude with a degree in Hunting Science, is proving a terrible, terrible distraction from my own academics.

Required courses for Hunting Science would include Latin I and II, Introduction to Critical Mythology, History of Hunting, and a fourth year Advanced Seminar in Hunting Methodology. Electives might include an Ethics class (you know I'm thinking of Sam), a media studies crosslist called "Bump in the Night: The Supernatural in Popular Culture", and some sort of mythology crosslist. It's the small sort of program that would rely heavily on cross-lists for its electives.

The program-in-my-head has a definitely social sciences slant, which is no surprise given my own background. I also feel that a more practical approach would belong in a college setting (using the Canadian definition of college), though I suppose it could also be comparable to a professional degree.
