This question was put to the lot of us in [livejournal.com profile] loyal_badger and because it struck me as a potentially interesting discussion topic, I thought I'd post it here as well. I've actually had this discussion with one or two of you on previous occasions, though never quite with that question laid so bluntly on the table... but I'm a fan of blunt and straightforward, so here we go!

What makes a person beautiful in your eyes?

My answer to the question went something like this:

I find beauty in people who are willing to share themselves. They are the people whose smiles touch their eyes and invite you to join them in it. While they don't necessarily need to wear their hearts on their sleeves, there is a certain honesty and compassion about them which you cannot doubt and know is there more instinctively than anything else. That's not to exclude the rest of the population: I'd like to think we all have a certain beauty that is all our own. (Why yes, I am quite the dreamer.)

So, tell me my dears, what do you think?

I find a woman who is content to be who she is, and doesn't try to change her look or disposition to fit in with others, beautiful.

I find a woman who aspires to ideals and holds strong beliefs in things which I have no capacity for, such as religeon, beautiful.

Thank you for answering Colin! The general consensus across the two discussions seems to come 'round to the idea that someone who loves him or herself is beautiful. And yet look at how we tend to prize the physical! What fools we mortals be indeed.

People whose presence you long to be in, to laugh, to cry, to do anything. People who make you feel better, whether you are happy or sad to begin with. People who will go that extra distance for the people they care about.

*hugs* That's about all I have to say in reply.

I find it hard to describe it in words, as with most things. It's more of a feeling that reaches you deep within. Something that makes to take notice of the person and makes you want to just be around them because they give you such a positive energy. What they say, what they do, how they act, how they look, if could be any of all of these things.

Thank you for trying! =)

To steal a line from Jenny (in a different context): I think that people who have a generousity of spirit are beautiful. This can mean a lot of things, of course. It is a willingness to share of yourself, your time, your compassion and the things you are passionate about, is at least part of it.

(And look at me responding, eventually!)
