akeyoftimeI want to write the Prime Minister and smack some sense into him.
I was sitting in the living room, talking with my mother and minister, when talk turned to the tsunami. And a very, very good point was raised.
We have hundreds of Indonesian, Indian, Sri Lakan and likely immigrant from every other tsunami-struck nation living in Canada. Many of whom are licenced nurses and doctors, but are unable to practice here because of the way our system is structured. So instead of throwing large sums of money (which do help, I know) at the problem (to quote [info]thm), let's contact these people and offer to pay them a better salary than they're getting as cab drivers and cleaning ladies and send them over to work for a year. They know the language, they know the culture are they likely more than capable to do the job. So why isn't this happening? Instead of bumming around, waiting for Western doctors who need translators, to volunteer (again, not a bad thing), why not put these people's skills to use?
