I have a plea for help! I am trying to write a scene set in a club, but aside from some quarter-remembered movie scenes, I have no actual experience with clubs. Oops. I'm looking for the sensory information you'd get in a general club. I don't need a space in particular, just something beyond loud music and bass.

I really want to sit down and have a really, really good long complain, but aside from an uncomfortable and pervasive soreness in my body, I'm not really sure what I want to complain about. I think I'm just unexercised, post-Alertec, craving company and would do best to try and be positive.

Peter proposed that I run a game last night and my first reaction was "Eep! No!", but I find myself reconsidering. I'm making loose plans to do just that in the fall and didn't I just make a post about trying to be more confident in this kind of thing? I'm still concerned about systems though. There aren't any I know backwards and forwards and I haven't any books, though I imagine I could borrow those. We'll see! Maybe I will run a one-shot.

It really depends on what type of club it is. Usually they are crowded, loud, hot, but even that isn't consistent, if you go on an off night.

*nods* When busy they get rather warm and humid, and there's almost always a faint smell of cigarette smoke that people bring in with them. As the night progresses one starts to be able to see a sheen of sweat on the walls. Dance floors tend to be slightly sticky (I've wondered if that's intentional so drunks are less likely to slip and injure someone). People will brush by you constantly, and moving through the throng is a slow-moving slink between people oblivious to all but their company and their drink.

On off-nights they're more like too-loud dance studios with poor lighting.

I've certainly encountered what others have described, but I have a much more positive attitude towards it, I suppose.

Yes, it's definitely hot, but I find when you get into the music, you don't notice a thing. You fly on the emotions and energy around you, and especially if you really like a song, you don't hear anything but that music, and you don't notice anything but how you're moving to it.

It isn't until something pulls you out of the moment that you realise you're broiling, and then you walk outside for a breath of fresh air.

I've never noticed cigarrette smoke smell, though the floors do get sticky as the night progresses, thanks to spilled drinks.

Noticing the smoke smell might require one to have smoked before. I don't know for sure.

I'll echo the others here. Definitely the smell of cigarettes (and other smokables, depending on the club), definitely the heat. At the same time, if the vibe is good, there can be a feeling of almost tribal community. A large group of people all dancing to the same music kind of thing. Even if they are off in their own world, they're all there together.

Come to a club with us near the end of this week or during the weekend, unless you need to write the piece soon.
Like being drunk, or a kiss, clubbing is a personal experience which can be described but never known.

Clubs create sensory overload. They are dark, but often have flashing light or laser effects. They are noisy, either with people talking or with loud music. Each club has a unique feeling of its own that is eveident shortly after you enter the club. Most club goers at any given establishment try to dress similarly. You can always smell people (sweat, fragrances, B.O. good and bad), their clothing, smoke, and alcohol. Most clubs are decorated in a unique manner, that is half themed and half improvised.

Download the rule books. Piracy is fun.
You will run a good game and people will be happy.

Oh clubs don't feel like the do in the movies. The scene is more chaotic and edgy. People act differently when the know they are being watched.

Hope you feel better.

The people at the clubs don't really match movie scenes...there's a lot more dirty-dancing going on, and the guys tend to be a lot sleazier. Also, the bar is always completely crowded with people leaning on it, a lot of them holding out money, and the bartender rushing back and forth. And then two big guys with half-finished pints of beer just leaning and talking to each other, blocking a section of the bar and just being totally oblivious. I don't know if it's applicable, but at gay clubs people tend to touch you a lot more, though it's not that they're trying to touch you 'cause they want your body, it's just that everybody seems a lot more comfortable with themselves. I guess being at a gay bar kinda gives everyone a dirty little secret in common that they don't have to hide. I should stop cluttering up your comments page...also, there's no such thing as personal space in clubs, and bathrooms tend to be the worst you've ever seen.

i think it all depends on the music being played. but the general idea is that it's lit to try and make everyone look more attractive, and supplied with sound loud enough so that you don't have to worry about small talk. an environment with the express purpose of making everything seem better than it really is, and pushing people veryvery close to one another, forcing them to let go of personal space boundaries.

and you're welcome to complain about anything or nothing at all, to me. ill listen, even though i probably won't know exactly what i should say.
