Dear Doctor Who fandom,

Please stop writing Doctor/Rose reunion stories. (This goes for "Rose meets alternate universe Doctors" too). They were very lovely for a while and cathartic too, but the horse is dying, if not dead. Let's see some more stories where Rose gets on with her life! (Hoo boy, I hope that ficathon happens!)

I know we all miss her, but wouldn't it be interesting to see where her path goes if she stays with altTorchwood and her family? "Rose Tyler, Defender of the Earth" and all that? It makes me sad to see so many promising alt-verse set-ups abandoned a few chapters in.

ps. I want to write "Rose comes back to this universe and then chooses to leave again" (because it's where her life is now, and it's where she has people who love her and that she loves). Implied in that statement is that the Doctor does not, in fact, conveniently show up or get conveniently summoned. Doctor-free not-reunion fic! (Except that I would actually be a tease, since everyone would expect it to be.)

I like your idea, even more with the additions you've outlined in this post (especially if Martha is at Torchwood - I'm really looking forward to seeing how that is handled on the show, and I'd love to see other takes on it as well).

Should I be watching for this story in the near (or not-so-near) future? Please?

I have another Torchwood multi-parter that I'd like to finish writing first, which is liable to keep me busy for a while. If my enthusiasm for writing follows me into the fall (and I hope it does), then the odds are good! So long as I can figure out how to get Rose and her team here without ripping the Universes to shreds. Y'know :P I'm glad to hear that the idea has potential outside of my head! (I might bounce a few ideas off of you as I go along planning, if that's quite alright?)

I have accidentally come up with a perfectly simple, perfectly appropriate way to get the Doctor to Torchwood. So simple that I am going to have to break his Doctorish heart and have him arrive a day or a week too late. Because with their lifespans and chosen life paths, Jack and the Doctor are bound to run into each other again, if not seek each other out. And it would be so easy for Jack to say "Show up at this date and time, Rose will be here". *facepalms* Poor Doctor. I never meant to torture him with this project. Or Jack by default, since he'll have to set the whole thing up. Doesn't Ten have enough angst without me meddling? And the whole scene negates the sad, but optimistic tone I want to set up with Rose's return! (And you know what, there's no good reason for Jack *not* to tell in the first place and I can't imagine Rose telling him not to.)

Poor Ten. I am such a jerk.

It does make sense, I like it. Although... if Jack is going to tell the Doctor when Rose is there, then he must have lived through it. So he must know, even before telling the Doctor, whether or not the Doctor will arrive on time. So *deep breath*, given that the Doctor doesn't arrive on time, there is really no reason for Jack to torture the Doctor by giving him a date.

But - it occurs to me the way round this is for the Doctor to arrive on time, but decide not to intrude/be seen while Rose is there. He could still tell Jack afterwards that he was there, so Jack knows to tell him, and so on - so no causality problems.

I think this could fit with Ten's characterisation too - witness his interactions with Sarah Jane, he wants his previous companions to 'grow up' and make an independent life. Or Martha (although that will depend on how it is handled in the next season). Plus you could still get heaps of Ten angst out of it :)

Anyway. My completely unsolicited advice :) (And if you don't write this, I think I may have to beg permission to! It's getting stuck in my head.)

Here's the thing. Jack has no reason not to tell Ten. Great. So the end of the week or however long, and bam, no Doctor. Jack says, "Oh, I guess I don't tell him... why? That makes no sense." So long as Jack intends to tell, the Doctor will show up at some point during the time Rose is there. However, if the Doctor shows up a day too late (and in doing so, establishes the timeline), Jack has to tell the Doctor so that he can get it wrong, or else cause a paradox. The Doctor will shut off and pretend like it's okay and he might not even hate Jack, because he'll understand, on some level, why it had to be done.

I'm not sure he would stay away, though. I don't know that he would have sought out Sarah Jane, but staying away from Rose? I'm really wibbly on that. Besides, I don't really want this to be about Doctor/Rose, or really the Doctor at all. I want this to highlight Rose's continued life's journey without the Doctor and having him pop back in to say "She's done well" cheapens the whole enterprise. (Because it's still the Doctor justifying and approving of a Companion, which Rose isn't any longer.) I'm already struggling with a tragic epilogue that puts him front and center. I'll stew on the idea of a lurking Doctor, really, I will. It's just... right now, unless I can rework it, it's not the direction I want to go with the story.

Honestly, even though I love the idea, I'm not sure it keeps the thematic focus on Rose like you want, (unless I am misunderstanding again?)

It's just... right now, unless I can rework it, it's not the direction I want to go with the story.

Hey, no worries :) It's your story, and given the reason's you've outlined here, it makes perfect sense NOT to go that way. And this is your story (and your journal too), you have every right to ignore my unsolicited ideas, or tell me to shut up and go away.

Paradoxes are obnoxious, aren't they? :P You're right, the proposed epilogue completely wrecks the thematic focus. I was hoping I could work it someway that wouldn't, because like I said, it's such a diabolically simply way to get the Doctor there that it's a bit no-fail. Maybe I can concoct an even messier paradox to get me out of it!
