Sep. 17th, 2007 10:24 pmSome Doctor Who and Torchwood fanfiction recs! I've been collecting a list of stories I've really enjoyed since I got into fandom and I thought I'd start sharing. The quality of the writing will jump around a little bit, but I'll often puts things on the list because it was still well executed and the unique concept grabbed me. Many of them have third season spoilers in them, but I've noted that first thing after the title and author.
1. Steal Me Away by
themonkeycabal
The first half of the piece is predominantly a really great character study of Jack. Among other things, it pulls in some great ideas about legends and Jack's past as a Time Agent and how it all connects back to the Doctor. We get a lovely reunion scene with Ten and Rose as well. (I am a sucker for Ten/Jack/Rose, especially when it's reasonably gen.)
2. Two Time Lords On A Boat by

Spoilers for The Last of the Time Lords
This is the kind of thing I really wish would happen in this year's Christmas special. Not to be taken too seriously, as it's a self-admitted crack!fic, it's still hilarious to watch Nine and Ten play off of each other.
3. Have You Forgotten Miss Jones? by

Spoilers for Blink through The Last of the Timelords
Sally Sparrow and Larry Nightingale navigate the events of the 2007 series finale. I really enjoyed watching our two protagonists cope as best they could as ordinary mortals in extraordinary circumstances. Bonus appearance by Martha Jones!

Spoilers for The Last of the Timelords
Every wonder what goes on inside the head of a Toclafane? Yeah, neither had I.
5. Editorial: What Happened to Rose Tyler? by

Spoilers for Doomsday
One of my biggest regrets about the way series two ended was that it wrote out the possibility of Sarah Jane interacting with an older, post-Doctor Rose. This is an editorial written by 'Sarah Jane Smith' and is probably as close to that interaction as we could ever hope to see canonically.
6. Ageist by
wendymr
This is as cute little ficlet featuring Ten, Jack, and Rose. It's Jack's birthday and there's a lot of silly banter back and forth. For those who ship the OT3, it takes a brief twist to it at the very end. Genfic lovers can enjoy the rest of it as is.

Spoilers through Doomsday
No really, after that huge rant about reunion-fic, I'm actually reccing Doctor/Rose (and I'll do it again!) The story has ten outside perspectives on the relationship between Rose and the Doctor. I'm not wild about the last scene, which deals with Doctor and Rose without any outside observers, but then, it's the most blatantly shippy scene of the lot, so it will probably be more enjoyable for those who are more into the pairing. Of the ten outside perspectives, I especially enjoyed Captain Jack Harkness and Captain Zachary Cross Flane, but they all carry their own weight.
8. Not a Double Entendre by
smithy161 (Adult)
Spoilers for Series 3 Doctor Who.
Written as the first of a series of five stories (Five Times the Doctor Went Back for Jack), this story is by far the best of the lot. It's Ten/Jack pairing and smutty, neither of which you'll see me rec all that often, but this story reverses the usual power dynamic between the two men (I'll say it time and time again, I love it when Companions take charge) and I'm absolutely loving the tone and tension the author has set up. Bonus points: the opening line is a pun.
9. Series Three (Donna Everywhere Remix by

Spoilers for The Last of the Time Lords
I've developed an incredible affection for Donna and this story puts her in Martha's shoes as the third season companion. I'd never really trade Martha in, but the way Donna is written almost makes me wish she'd been there instead.

Spoilers for Doomsday, The Last of the Time Lords
This is some of the best of the rather rare Doctor Who femmeslash I've managed to find. Dipping into the classic series to pull out former companions Ace, Romana, and Mel, it also makes use of Rose and Martha in a collection of short scenes. Knowledge of Classic Who isn't essential (I'm hardly well-versed myself), though having the gist of the characters makes it more fun. I think I like 1 and 3 best, but they all have a different tang to them.

A Ninth Doctor drabble that packs a punch. Set during Aliens of London.
12. Permutations" by

Spoilers for Doomsday (DW) and Cyberwoman (TW).
A Torchwood AU piece based on the prompt: "It was Ianto and not Lisa who was partially converted." I love the Lisa the author creates and the appearance of mysterious Jack is an added bonus.

Casting spoilers for the second season of Torchwood
Torchwood Three gets itself into a spot of trouble with a giant android. Comedy, crossover and heroic coat flapping ensue.
14. Terms of Art by
loneraven
Set post Human Nature/Family of Blood.
It's hard for me to summarize why this story works so well, but I can say that the flow is gorgeous and it weaves flashbacks and episode-insert scenes in with the story's post-episode present as the Doctor struggles (and Martha alongside him) to re-orient himself after having lost the security he had as John Smith.
15. Nowhere Man by Astrogirl (Torchwood/Doctor Who/ DS9 crossover)
Spoilers for End of Days (TW) and The Last of the Time Lords (DW)
Set during the Year That Never Was, the Torchwood Team finds actual rift debris in the Himalayas - Elim Garak. We spend a lot of time on Owen, who goes through quite a nice arc as he works his way up the ranks posing as a collaborator. There's an absolutely brilliant passage in there about first contact and Garak is very well written as well.
