What the hell?

I don't hold books my as incredibly sacred. (Maybe just a little?) I have a lot of respect for them and I'd probably hesitate before ripping pages out of them or cutting them, but writing in the margins? Highlighting? Folding down corners? Sure. Why not. I know some bibliophiles consider this sacrilegious, but books are meant to be used, enjoyed, and understood and if that takes a few folded corners and pencil marks, then I fail to see the problem. It's a little shakier with a library book, but so long as it's still legible for the next person, I do not really consider it a big deal.

Ripping thirty pages out of a library book, however, is a whole other ballpark. That's half a chapter, just gone. RRRRRRrrr.

I'm a firm believer in keeping books healthy, primarily because I am a devotee of used book stores.
On the other hand, I very much do like if I get a book and it has been annotated well; it's like a free discussion landing in my lap. I just dislike highlighters.

I am thus annoyed on your behalf for the wanton destruction, and somewhat in agreement about annotation.

I got used to highlighters from used textbooks, but I do admit prefer not to have those marks in. What someone else finds important to useful to their understanding may not be for me.

Used books stores are awesome love. There are vague notions of a Victoria bookstore crawl with some of my friends - I swear there are more used bookstores crammed into that town (especially if you include the general area) than an equivalent portion of Toronto.
