Time outside of the house, moving around the city on my own, and having a random Harry Potter theories conversation in a bookstore? Today was officially awesome.

"One day I'll find a doctor, the right sort of doctor, and maybe he can explain it." -Captain Jack, regarding the fact that he can't stay dead.
"A" doctor, Jack? No no no, I think you're using the wrong word there. I think you're looking for "the". Of course, can't make the links too obvious, since an appearance by the Doctor in Torchwood would totally consume the show and make it an episode of Doctor Who. That show is too busy having fun with expressions like "top banana" and praising edible ball bearings to really fit the mood of Torchwood.

Even money that's the Doctor's severed hand in that jar.

"He'll shag anything if it's gorgeous enough."
If nothing else, he'll certainly flirt with it. (What I really want to say is "Biiiiiiiingo", but I want to give Captain Jack at least a sliver of credit not to sleep with anyone or thing that could get him into serious trouble. He certainly left Rose well enough alone!)

So the question remains: how did Jack get so far backwards in time and how does his story manage to intersect with the Doctor's again? I suppose it's possible that his meeting with the Doctor takes place before Torchwood is set, isn't it, but then the timeline doesn't fit. I guess I'll just have to wait and see.

As a fan of Doctor Who, it's so obvious that Jack is not from this time and maybe not even this planet (colonies are a clear possibility), so I can't imagine how cryptic it would all be to someone who knows nothing of his Doctor Who history. So far (and I am not very far in), it seems like Torchwood doesn't know that time travel is possible. You'd think they'd have factored it into their discussions and theories about their boss if they knew.

Anyway. Solid start, though the first episode was pretty weak. Creator Russell T. Davies doesn't seem to have much of a knack for writing first episodes; if I weren't at a friend's house specifically to watch the show, I might have dropped Doctor Who after seeing the premiere. As it was, it took me over a year to come back to it. (I stuck with Torchwood one because Captain Jack is my favourite [if you hadn't caught that already] and Doctor Who got to be way better).

Quick edit regarding Doctor Who's season two finale - seriously kids, "Delete" and "Exterminate"? Either one their own would have been a solid plot. There was no need to pit them against each other. I was sitting here listening to the two sides yammer their catch phrases at each other, incredibly unamused. I know it was supposed to be a big send-off for Rose, but I was underwhelmed by the entire affair. (Though getting cut off after "Rose Tyler..."? Worst. Timing. Ever.)

Goodnight!

I saw a great "Captain Jack" crossover icon a few days ago. If I bump into it again, I'll link you to it!

Thanks!
I saw an awsome Captain Jack icon a while a go: "Maybe he's born with it, maybe it's Maybelline". I'm really sorry I didn't bookmark that one.

Dude, the whole Captain Jack thing gets really REALLY messed up/explained in the end of the third season of Doctor Who.

So, Torchwood is a spin-off? Totally didn't know that/now have something to watch this summer.

ALSO, hand thing is explained in third season of Doctor.
ALSO, Daleks vs Cybermen was amazingly hilarious.
ALSO, it should have been called battle of the monotone catch phrases.
ALSO, when does Torchwood take place? 'Cus the third season of Doctor Who indicates that Jack goes back in time a couple decades or so.
ALSO, The Face of Bo is the single greatest plot device/character EVER!!

Torchwood is a spin-off! It features Captain Jack Harkness in the role of Captain Jack Harkness. They references a few Doctor Who things as well, like the rift in space and time in Cardiff, as well as the Battle of Canary Wharf (Daleks vs Cybermen). It's a got a different feel to it, but it's not so bad, to date.

Hilarious in the lamest possible way? The same fellow voices both Daleks and Cybermen, so at least they kept him busy with those two episodes.

There's this hilarious special episode of The Weakest Link UK and all of the players are from Doctor Who (K-9 even shows up to play). All of Anne's snappy remarks become themed, like "Who couldn't find their way out of a 1960s police box?"

Torchwood started airing this year, so it ran concurrently or just before season 3 of Doctor Who. It's set in the modern day.

I guess it's a Your Mileage May Vary - the Dalek vs Cyberman trash talk was one of the funniest things I saw that season. ;)

Of course, it doesn't hold a candle to the Season 3 finale, but that's okay. Because the Season 3 finale was brilliant. Just brilliant.

The season 3 finale WAS brilliant. Though I'm still iffy about that one moment... the glowy one... I think you know which I mean... I'm sure I'll warm to it when I see the episode a second time. :D

But, yeah. Watch season 3, Katie. But finish Torchwood before seeing S03E11 of Doctor Who (if you care enough about Torchwood).

Also, on the Dalek/Cybermen battle... c'mon! Stephen Hawking vs. The Speaking Clock! :D It was awesome...

Okay, that was a good line, even if I have no idea what The Speaking Clock is.

I thought that (most of the "That's good... I should use that." references aside) The Shakespeare Code (episode 2 of season 3) had some hilarious lines. Then again, the Doctor tends to get hilarious lines all the time. Yay!

Why win the world would I skip season 3? Right now, I'm watching the episodes more or less concurrently (one of each at time), but I'll zip through to the end of Torchwood before I watch the finale. I know a few spoilers - I know why Jack can't die - thanks to some forays into fandom, so thank you for the advice.

It felt like they were trying way too hard to make this threat A Very Big Deal. Maybe I'll come back at it with a very mocking attitude at some point. (Though I will inevitably get teary-eyed when it comes to the Doctor and Rose's farewell. Because I've been known to cry at commericials.)
