Time outside of the house, moving around the city on my own, and having a random Harry Potter theories conversation in a bookstore? Today was officially awesome.

"One day I'll find a doctor, the right sort of doctor, and maybe he can explain it." -Captain Jack, regarding the fact that he can't stay dead.
"A" doctor, Jack? No no no, I think you're using the wrong word there. I think you're looking for "the". Of course, can't make the links too obvious, since an appearance by the Doctor in Torchwood would totally consume the show and make it an episode of Doctor Who. That show is too busy having fun with expressions like "top banana" and praising edible ball bearings to really fit the mood of Torchwood.

Even money that's the Doctor's severed hand in that jar.

"He'll shag anything if it's gorgeous enough."
If nothing else, he'll certainly flirt with it. (What I really want to say is "Biiiiiiiingo", but I want to give Captain Jack at least a sliver of credit not to sleep with anyone or thing that could get him into serious trouble. He certainly left Rose well enough alone!)

So the question remains: how did Jack get so far backwards in time and how does his story manage to intersect with the Doctor's again? I suppose it's possible that his meeting with the Doctor takes place before Torchwood is set, isn't it, but then the timeline doesn't fit. I guess I'll just have to wait and see.

As a fan of Doctor Who, it's so obvious that Jack is not from this time and maybe not even this planet (colonies are a clear possibility), so I can't imagine how cryptic it would all be to someone who knows nothing of his Doctor Who history. So far (and I am not very far in), it seems like Torchwood doesn't know that time travel is possible. You'd think they'd have factored it into their discussions and theories about their boss if they knew.

Anyway. Solid start, though the first episode was pretty weak. Creator Russell T. Davies doesn't seem to have much of a knack for writing first episodes; if I weren't at a friend's house specifically to watch the show, I might have dropped Doctor Who after seeing the premiere. As it was, it took me over a year to come back to it. (I stuck with Torchwood one because Captain Jack is my favourite [if you hadn't caught that already] and Doctor Who got to be way better).

Quick edit regarding Doctor Who's season two finale - seriously kids, "Delete" and "Exterminate"? Either one their own would have been a solid plot. There was no need to pit them against each other. I was sitting here listening to the two sides yammer their catch phrases at each other, incredibly unamused. I know it was supposed to be a big send-off for Rose, but I was underwhelmed by the entire affair. (Though getting cut off after "Rose Tyler..."? Worst. Timing. Ever.)

Goodnight!

It felt like they were trying way too hard to make this threat A Very Big Deal. Maybe I'll come back at it with a very mocking attitude at some point. (Though I will inevitably get teary-eyed when it comes to the Doctor and Rose's farewell. Because I've been known to cry at commericials.)
